The story opens with the weary seaman Dryden craving a break from the cramped decks of the Neptune. While the ship’s doctor, Ross, waxes philosophical about a life at sea, Dryden spots a chance to step ashore in Leixões Harbour, drawn by the promise of fresh air and the mysterious Miss de Roda, who has just disembarked alone. Their brief, witty banter hints at deeper currents beneath the routine of cargo unloading and the arrival of new passengers.
Soon Dryden finds himself on a small boat heading toward the remote Greensea Island off the Essex coast, a place that seems both idyllic and oddly foreboding. The island’s quiet villages and crumbling estates soon reveal strange clues—a sickly patriarch, an uncertain niece, and whispered talk of hidden motives—that pull him into a web of suspicion and intrigue. As the first day on shore unfolds, Dryden’s curiosity grows, laying the groundwork for a classic mystery where loyalties are tested and the sea’s calm surface hides restless secrets.
