Description

A weary traveler with only a sixpence to his name wanders into a modest eatery, hoping a modest meal will buy him a moment’s respite. While scanning the menu, he spots an old companion, Billy Logan, nursing a scar from a failed Chilean uprising. Their reunion sparks a lively exchange of jokes and memories, recalling past brawls in Buenos Aires and the narrow escape that sent the narrator to Bolivia. Over shared bottles of wine, they trade stories of narrow survivals and narrow chances.

The conversation quickly turns to the narrator’s recent brush with a hidden gold vein in the Andes, a find that promises wealth but demands more hands and resources. Determined to turn his luck around, he plans to head to London and then catch a ship for New York, hoping the American market will fund a larger venture. Billy, meanwhile, is about to embark on a prospecting job in Mexico, and the two men exchange addresses, promising to keep in touch should their fortunes diverge. The meeting sets the stage for a new chapter of daring pursuits and restless ambition.
