The story opens on a bleak, endless forest where Sigbert, an aging Bat-ouw father, and his three sons have been wandering for days without water or food, subsisting on bitter mushrooms. The morning light brings a fleeting sense of hope, but the men remain tangled in a maze of ancient superstitions—guided by the fixed star Brendel and the fickle goddess Nehalennia, whose favor seems to dictate the success of their desperate trek. Their restless journey is marked by harsh weather, strange omens, and the constant threat of the untamed wilderness swallowing them whole.
Tensions rise as the brothers clash over how to appease the gods. The eldest, a skilled climber, hunts for signs in the treetops, while the youngest, educated in omens, argues that Nehalennia’s anger may stem from their recent plea to the mysterious Harimona. Their older sibling, a seasoned sailor, distrusts the deity outright, recalling broken promises and costly sacrifices. As the Bat-ouw’s harvest fails for the third season, the family’s struggle becomes a broader test of faith, survival, and the fragile bonds that hold their people together.
