Description

Mark Robarts, the diligent son of a respectable Exeter physician, enjoys a steady stream of praise from those who know him. His early education places him under the wing of a kindly clergyman, where he forms a close bond with the young Lord Lufton, a friendship that shapes his social world. Summers spent at Framley Court under the watchful eye of Lady Lufton deepen the connection, and both boys eventually follow each other to Harrow and Oxford, where Mark’s good manners and modest success win him admiration among peers.

Now faced with the choice of a career, Mark’s father visits the Luftons to discuss a future in the Church, a path gently suggested by the family that holds the living of Framley. As Mark weighs his options, the novel paints a vivid picture of Regency society, its expectations, and the subtle maneuverings of ambition and affection. Listeners are invited into a world of genteel humor, lively dialogue, and the delicate balance between personal desire and the duties imposed by class and family.
