Description

In a tranquil countryside cottage, a newly arrived Mrs. Olcott tries to escape the loneliness and financial strain of her husband’s distant posting in West Africa. When the good‑natured but unremarkable Andrew Allinson appears—having once served with her husband in the Boer campaign—he offers more than a friendly conversation, stepping in to examine the mounting bills she can barely manage. Their cautious partnership begins amid the gentle hum of bees, the scent of fresh moorland air, and the quiet confidence of a man who feels a duty to protect a friend’s wife.

As the two navigate the practicalities of rent, debts, and the awkwardness of a stranger’s involvement in private affairs, a subtle romance flickers beneath the surface. Their growing rapport is set against a vivid landscape of rolling hills, ochre fields, and a bright autumn sky, hinting at both the challenges and the hope that rural life can bring. The opening promises a gentle, character‑driven tale of responsibility, compassion, and the unexpected connections that arise in new surroundings.
