Description

Endless rain has turned the river valley into a relentless swamp, drowning roads and fields while whole towns sit perched on makeshift high‑ground camps. Men, women, and children cling to soggy wagons and crumbling bridges, their supplies dwindling and disease looming on the horizon. The landscape is a bleak tableau of water‑logged misery, each moment threatening to wash away what little hope remains.

Into this desperate scene arrives Nick Wentworth, a seasoned pilot of the U.S. Air Patrol, summoned to swap his usual border work for a life‑saving mission over the flooded Mississippi. Ordered by a weary Army major, he and three fellow aviators are to keep their planes aloft around the clock, dropping food and medical aid wherever it is needed. Their only runway for now is a rough field at Monticello, with a new strip at Pine Bluff promised soon.

The narrative follows Nick’s frantic scramble to master massive transport aircraft, coordinate with ground crews, and navigate a sky thick with mist and danger. As the flood swells, the pilots’ daring drops become a thin thread of salvation for the stranded, hinting at the courage and resilience required when nature turns hostile.
