Description

In a quiet countryside cottage, a shy young woman is startled when a ragged tramp seeks shelter and water on a warm June day. Her attempts at courtesy quickly turn uneasy as the stranger’s probing questions reveal a hidden connection to her family’s past. The tension builds when the tramp’s unsettling behavior hints at a dangerous secret lurking beneath his humble appearance.

Just then, a tall, composed hunter named August arrives, confronting the intruder with a rifle and a promise to protect Miss Vane. Their clash forces the young woman to choose between handing the tramp over to the law or offering him a chance to leave, while the promise of a five‑thousand‑dollar reward looms over the encounter. The scene sets the stage for a tense pursuit that will test loyalties, uncover hidden motives, and pull the quiet village into a web of intrigue.

A. Frank Pinkerton

Best known for brisk late-Victorian crime fiction, this elusive writer brought railroad robberies, detectives, and high-stakes pursuit to life. Very little is firmly documented about him, which only adds to the old-mystery feel around his books.
