Two men climb a windswept moor in the north of Perthshire, their path ending at a lone sign pointing toward the forgotten village of Glune. The place feels like a silent monument to decay: empty cottages, neglected gardens, and a solitary shop exhaling the sharp scents of leather, peppermint and onions. The surrounding castle looms behind high, narrow grilles, its gloom reminiscent of an isolated Escorial, while the landscape seems to breathe a lingering sorrow that touches even the most hardened traveler.
Among the pair, Brand is a slightly deformed, well‑read gentleman whose peculiar smile and sharp mind set him apart from the genteel crowd, while his younger companion, Cummings, is a tall, athletic youth still searching for his own identity. Their mismatched temperaments promise an uneasy partnership as they stand on the brink of Glune’s mysteries, each drawn there by a curiosity that may soon test the limits of their resolve.
