Description

In the waning months of 1431, the bustling port of Venice hums with the clatter of foreign hulls and the chatter of merchants from every corner of the known world. A bulky Venetian trader, newly laden with cotton, spice, and wine from Crete, pushes out of the crowded harbor under the watchful eye of its owner, Master Piero Quirini, and the seasoned sailing‑master Christoforo Fioravanti. Sixty‑eight souls—Italian merchants, Greek laborers, and Cretan sailors—share cramped decks, their voices mingling in songs that echo across the Adriatic as they set a course for the uncertain waters of the north.

Autumn sky darkens quickly, and an eerie glimmer on the horizon prompts Quirini to order the sails reefed. As the crew scrambles, storm descends with ferocity that chokes the air and hurls the ship into towering waves. Amid the howling wind, the rudder is ripped away, leaving the vessel at the mercy of a sea, and the sailors cling to whatever support they can find. Scene sets a stark portrait of seamanship, faith, and the fragile hope of a voyage that may never reach home.

Some of the world’s most enduring books come from writers whose names were never recorded or never revealed. “Anonymous” on a title page can mean many different things: a lost identity, a deliberate choice, or a work shaped by tradition over time.
