Description

In a crumbling Breton château, the formidable Countess Dowager de Gramont confronts her son, Count Tristan, over his startling proposal to involve the family estate in a transatlantic railway venture. Their heated exchange reveals a clash of worlds: the old‑world aristocracy clinging to tradition and the lure of modern commerce promising to revive their dwindling fortunes. The mansion itself, a “fine ruin” of faded grandeur, mirrors the family’s precarious position, while the surrounding gardens, tended by a gardener‑turned‑butler, hint at the subtle shifts already at play.

Tristan argues that the railroad could transform a neglected American tract into a lucrative asset, offering a lifeline for the once‑proud lineage. Yet his mother sees such speculation as a betrayal of noble dignity, fearing that the very title they cherish will be reduced to a mere bargaining chip. Their conflict sets the stage for a story that explores the tension between heritage and progress, pride and practicality, in a world where the old order is being quietly reshaped.
