Description

In a remote Russian village a modest yeoman leaves his modest estate to three sons, the youngest of whom is known as Emelian, the village fool. While his clever brothers set off for the city with their shares of the inheritance, Emelian stays behind, bound by his sisters‑in‑law’s commands and driven by the promise of bright new clothing they hope to win for him. The tale opens with his simple, laid‑back life around the hearth, a portrait of a peasant whose laziness masks an unexpected resilience.

When a bitter frost freezes the river, his sisters‑in‑law demand that he fetch water, and despite his reluctance he drags himself out into the icy night. He breaks a hole in the ice, fills his buckets, and is startled by a massive pike that swims into the opening. Grabbing the fish, Emelian is met with a surprising reply from the creature, hinting at a curious bargain that may change his fortunes.
