Description

A quiet Finnish village prepares for a day of unexpected joy as the Portolu family awaits the return of Elias, a son who has just completed a long prison sentence. The household buzzes with activity—walls are replastered, wine is brewed, and fresh bread is baked—while the elder brothers, Pietro, Mattia and the rough‑hewn Berte, joke and groom themselves for the celebration. Their mother Annedda, a shy, pallid woman who cherishes Elias above all, watches the preparations with a mixture of hope and nervous anticipation.

When the distant sound of footsteps finally arrives, Elias steps through the gate, tall and gaunt, his skin pale from years behind bars. The village women swarm around him, offering blessings and well‑wishes, while the family cat darts between the crowd. The scene is a tender blend of relief, tradition, and the simple pleasure of a home finally whole again, setting the stage for the life that will unfold in the days ahead.
