In the windswept hills of early twentieth‑century Sardinia, an aging servant named Efisio tends the dwindling Pinzorro household. The three remaining sisters—two widows and the youngest, still unwed—live in a once‑proud mansion that now clings to fading traditions. Efisio has devoted himself to their care, believing that serving them will atone for a secret crime: a tragic accident that cost his former master his life while Efisio tried to flee with the lover of the fourth sister, Lia. The novel opens with his quiet routine and the tension that hovers like the constant wind.
Around him the island is shifting: merchants replace nobles, new ideas arrive, and younger relatives return from Rome. Efisio feels torn between his steadfast sense of duty and the awareness that his self‑imposed penance may never bring true peace. A conversation with the distant nephew Giacinto, who embodies the restless new generation, brings the clash of tradition and progress into focus. The tone remains solemn yet intimate, inviting listeners into the inner world of a man seeking redemption in a changing Sardinia.
