Description

In a bustling Budapest corner stands Gombos Bálint’s eclectic shop, its golden‑lettered doors and artfully arranged window display drawing the eye of schoolchildren and city folk alike. Inside, the proprietor prides himself on an endless variety of affordable trinkets, from fragrant spices to curious novelties, while a whimsical unicorn sign—crafted from a horse’s hindquarters and a deer’s antlers—has become a local emblem of prosperity. Yet behind the charming façade, Gombos wrestles with a widening gap between the cash flowing in and the mounting expenses that keep his ledgers out of balance.

Encouraged by his ever‑optimistic wife, he turns to borrowing, believing that credit will smooth the disparity and preserve the shop’s reputation. As debts accumulate, the household’s social ambitions grow louder, and whispers from neighbours hint at envy and suspicion. Listeners will find themselves drawn into Gombos’s world of ambition, familial pressure, and the delicate dance between appearance and reality, wondering how far he will let his confidence carry him before the inevitable reckoning.

Gergely Csiky

1842–1891

A sharp-eyed Hungarian playwright, he helped shape modern bourgeois drama with comedies and social plays that brought everyday manners and moral tensions onto the stage. Trained first for the church, he later turned fully to literature and became one of the most widely performed dramatists of his time in Hungary.
