Gergely Csiky

1842–1891

A sharp-eyed Hungarian playwright, he helped shape modern bourgeois drama with comedies and social plays that brought everyday manners and moral tensions onto the stage. Trained first for the church, he later turned fully to literature and became one of the most widely performed dramatists of his time in Hungary.

About the author

Born on December 8, 1842, in Pankota, in what was then Arad County, he studied Roman Catholic theology in Pest and Vienna and was later ordained as a priest. He taught at the Priests' College in Timișoara before leaving that path in the late 1870s and devoting himself to literature.

His writing career included novels, works on church history, translations, and above all plays. He became known for dramas and comedies that observed social life closely, and he is often associated with the rise of Hungarian bourgeois drama. Among his best-known works are Proletárok, Mukányi, and A nagymama.

He died in Budapest on November 19, 1891. Though his life was relatively short, his influence lasted, and theaters in Hungary and Romania have carried his name in recognition of his place in Hungarian dramatic literature.
