Description

In the sweltering August sunshine of 1853, the respectable De Milde family sets out for a casual promenade through The Hague’s leafy linden avenue. Patriarch De Milde, a dignified gentleman in a sleek black frock coat and a towering stovepipe hat, leads his three quietly observant daughters along the shaded walk. Their intended destination—a seaside tent at Scheveningen—has been replaced by a spontaneous detour toward a local sociëteit, prompting light‑hearted remarks about the heat and the pace of their stride.

The elder daughter, Kee, balances her father's exuberant gestures with a calm practicality, while her younger sisters follow with a gentle curiosity about the bustling city life around them. Their father’s habit of introducing himself as “the old gentleman” masks a surprisingly energetic character who peppers conversation with flamboyant gestures and a sparkling white vest. As they pass courteous strangers and seasoned locals, the family’s genteel composure hints at hidden ambitions that may soon surface beneath the polite façade of nineteenth‑century Dutch society.
