Description

The story opens on a festive evening in a far‑flung Indonesian plantation where a young Dutch woman is being introduced to her new life. Her husband, radiant and proud, sits beside her while the surrounding guests—single colleagues, the plantation’s administrator, and other expatriates—present a cornucopia of tropical fruits and fragrant wines, turning the dinner into a colorful spectacle of unfamiliar tastes. As the night deepens, the air fills with the smoke of cigars and the distant chirp of crickets, hinting at both the exotic allure and the underlying isolation of this distant outpost.

In the days that follow, the community rallies around the couple, pooling money for a wedding gift that must be “artistic” enough to satisfy the bride’s refined sensibilities. Their awkward attempts reveal a clash between colonial propriety and the raw, vibrant life of the Indies, while the bride navigates expectations, language barriers, and a longing for a sense of belonging. Listeners are invited to share her first impressions, the quiet moments of fatigue, and the simmering curiosity that will shape the early chapters of her new marriage.
