Description

Hilda Thorn’s world shifts from the quiet corners of a London square to the sprawling fields of Hertfordshire when her long‑absent guardian summons her home. An orphan raised in a boarding school, she has already felt the sting of loss, but a sudden, intense encounter with a missionary service awakens a fierce new devotion that steadies her restless heart. The story opens with Hilda perched beneath ancient elms, wrestling with the promise of “dwelling deep” as she turns the Bible’s pages for comfort. Her inner transformation hints at a life that might soon be guided more by faith than by the fleeting promises of society.

Soon, Hilda finds herself navigating the expectations of a stern, retired cavalry officer and the lively, skeptical daughters of Mrs. Forsyth, who watch her every move. The gentle rhythms of country life clash with the stirrings of a youthful spirit eager to serve a higher purpose, while whispered doubts and subtle tensions begin to surface among the household. As Hilda settles into her new home, she must decide whether to follow the familiar path laid before her or to pursue the deeper calling that has just begun to echo in her soul.
