A bewildered young clerk wanders into the bustling heart of a Hungarian political daily, drawn by a cryptic sign above the entrance. Inside, the building reeks of stale paper and an unsettling aroma, while scant furnishings and absurd proclamations hint at a place where truth is both prized and warped. The protagonist, Schenk I. János, feels a strange linguistic unease as he navigates the dimly lit lobby, searching for a clerk who never appears.
Soon a relentless ringing phone pierces the silence, accompanied by a gravelly voice demanding attention and threatening chaos if ignored. Schenk’s attempts to answer draw him deeper into a labyrinth of petty power struggles, eccentric editors, and bureaucratic absurdities that seem both comical and menacing. As the first act unfolds, listeners are left wondering whether the newspaper is a beacon of independence or a trap set by unseen forces.
