The book presents a careful portrait of Christina of Stommeln, a thirteenth‑century mystic whose quiet devotion left a lasting imprint on the Cologne archdiocese. Drawing on the handwritten codex from the Jülich parish archive and other contemporary sources, the author reconstructs her early years, her entrance into the service of the Church, and the simple yet steadfast faith that set her apart. Readers hear how Christina’s reputation for humility and charity grew long before the later controversies surrounding her visions.
Beyond this phase of Christina’s spiritual journey, when she began to experience what she described as divine encounters and unsettling trials, the author balances the miraculous accounts with a rational assessment of the period’s medical and social explanations, leaving the listener to judge the nature of her sufferings. This blend of scholarly detail and vivid storytelling offers a window into the life of a woman whose sanctity was questioned and celebrated alike.
