Novellen
In a languid early‑summer Berlin the narrator first spots a striking figure named Jamaica, a courtesan whose sun‑kissed skin and flowing dark hair give her an almost exotic air. Her presence is magnetic—tight‑fitted dress, tall black hat with swaying feathers, eyes that glitter like pearls—and she moves through the streets with a dignified, unattainable grace. Captivated, the narrator follows her, only to be introduced by a friend who hints at her tangled connections with princes, artists and foreign nobles.
Their brief conversation leads to a promise of a later rendezvous at the circus, a setting that promises both romance and intrigue. The narrator’s anticipation builds as he waits on a small square, clutching roses, while Jamaica appears in a distant box, sharing sweets with a blond gentleman. A fleeting touch of her hand and the subtle glances exchanged hint at a delicate dance of desire and uncertainty, leaving the listener eager to hear how their entangled worlds will unfold.

Best known outside Germany for the poems that inspired Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, this writer brought distant literary traditions to new readers through lyrical reworkings and translations. His work moved easily between poetry, travel writing, essays, and drama.
