Muriel Standen has spent her childhood on a quiet farm, raised by the kindly O’Hara family after the loss of her unknown parents. When her foster mother dies, a letter arrives from the elderly lawyer Henry Morton Gascoigne, offering her a place in his home and a puzzling promise to reveal the secrets of her lineage.
