After the loss of the Duncan, the expedition that had chased Captain Grant’s trail is left adrift. Mary Grant, still haunted by her father’s disappearance, summons the resolve to press on, urging the group to return to Scotland and keep the promise to the fallen crew. John Mangles, moved by Mary’s determination, vows to devote his life to locating the missing captain, binding his promise with a solemn handshake. Together they begin to plot a new course, seeking a vessel that can carry them across the restless Southern seas.
Their hopes rest on the quiet harbor of Twofold Bay, where a handful of merchant ships linger but none seem bound for the distant ports of Melbourne or Sydney. With the steam routes scarce and the coastal waters thinly patrolled, the crew must decide whether to wait for a suitable ship or brave the treacherous coastline toward a larger port. As they weigh their options, the vast, silent ocean looms beyond, promising both peril and the chance to finally follow the faint trail left by Captain Grant.
