Description

A thin, relentless wind sweeps through the neon‑lit avenues of Dawningsburgh, a tourist‑packed outpost on the red planet where sand clings to every surface and the streets are signed in seven languages. Amid the bustle, Betsy O'Reilly drifts from one hollow encounter to the next—miners, stranded artists, couples on second honeymoons—while the promise of something genuine on Mars feels increasingly out of reach. She clings to the hope that beneath the glossy tours lies a fragment of the world’s forgotten splendor, a clue that might ease the dreary months she must endure back in New York.

One night, armed with a clunky emergency suit, Betsy slips out of the hotel and into the cold, moon‑streaked streets. She finds a dormant robot vendor, its avian‑inspired design strangely human, and asks the impossible question: what did the real Martians create here? The machine’s stilted reply only deepens the mystery, leaving her to wander the silent, frost‑bitten market in search of the hidden marvels that the guides refuse to reveal.
