Description

A sleek steamship bearing the bright red‑white Hamburg flag glides out of Lagos, carrying two curious brothers from a prominent merchant family and their learned tutors. Under the guidance of the respected Dr. Bolten and his young cousin, the natural‑science teacher Dr. Holm, the boys set out on a voyage that promises more than profit—it is a grand expedition to study the flora, fauna, and peoples of distant lands.

The ship, the newly christened Hammonia, heads first for Madeira, where the younger brother recovers from a lingering illness, and then on toward the bustling ports of Rio and the far‑off islands of the South Pacific. Along the way, the young scholars conduct experiments in the galley, catalog specimens, and trade observations with local traders, turning the vessel into a floating laboratory. Their journey offers a vivid glimpse into 19th‑century exploration, where commerce and curiosity sail side by side, inviting listeners to share in the wonder of discovery.
