INDICE
The work brings together newly uncovered testimonies about a little‑known episode of Giuseppe Garibaldi’s 1849 flight, compiled by a committee of Tuscan volunteers who wanted to honour his rescue. It draws on letters, local records and personal recollections to trace the desperate scramble from the Roman hills to the rugged Apennine passes. The focus is on the ordinary citizens who risked their lives to guide the fugitive leader through a hostile landscape.
After slipping away from a besieged Rome, Garibaldi and a small band of followers braved storms on fishing boats, only to be driven ashore on the bleak coast of Magnavacca under Austrian threat. There they found shelter in a solitary hut, where the ailing Anita, heavily pregnant, was tended by a compassionate local doctor before she tragically passed away. The narrative captures the stark mix of military pursuit, sheer exhaustion, and the unexpected kindness of peasants who risked execution to offer refuge.

A 19th-century Tuscan writer best known for preserving little-known details about Giuseppe Garibaldi’s life, he turned local memory and patriotic history into lively narrative. His work offers a small but vivid window into the world of the Italian Risorgimento.
