CHAPTER VIII.
In a quiet house where night lingers, a wide‑awake little girl named Chee slips away from bedtime to sit by an open window, listening to the echo of her Daddy Joe’s fiddle. The music sparks a fierce, private joy, making the world feel like a river over stones, and she refuses to let anyone call that feeling wicked. While her stern aunt warns her, Chee clings to the memory of the fiddle’s sweet, whispering tones and dreams of the sound lifting her toward heaven.
When dawn finally breaks, Chee wanders into the dusty attic, guided by a restless need to find the instrument that has haunted her thoughts. Among trunks of scarlet shawls, moccasins, and a small wooden box labeled “Mamma’s Playthings,” she uncovers relics of her family’s past, each one a clue to the musical heritage she longs to protect. The story follows her tender exploration of memory, music, and the simple courage it takes for a child to hold onto the sounds that shape her soul.
