NOTAS:
The volume brings to life the observations of Colonel Francisco Verdugo, who spent fourteen years as governor and captain‑general of Friesland during the reign of Philip II. From his own battlefield reports he describes the difficulties of holding a distant, largely Protestant province with limited resources, while confronting seasoned opponents such as Maurice of Nassau. His narrative balances strategic detail with personal reflections on what it meant to command a mixed army in the Low Countries.
In addition to the commentary, the edition includes several supporting documents that enrich the listening experience. Listeners will hear translated letters Verdugo wrote to restless Spanish soldiers, replies from the commander Luis de Requesens, and a concise report on the Dutch towns that housed his troops. A supplemental essay on the improvement of Spanish infantry discipline, originally printed in Naples, follows the main text, and the audio version preserves reproductions of the original title page, coat of arms, and a selected segment of a 172‑page manuscript.

A hard-fighting Spanish commander in the Dutch Revolt, he spent much of his career defending the northern Low Countries for the Habsburg crown. He is also remembered for leaving behind a firsthand account of the long and difficult war in Frisia and Groningen.
