Two sisters, Margaret and Frances, spend a sun‑drenched April morning chasing their own shadows along the coast of Southern California, daring each other to step on their heads. Their playful game is interrupted when their father hints at a fantastical tale of King Coco Bolo, an Archbishop, a lobster‑named Lobsterneck, and a snap‑dragon that sings. Intrigued, the girls decide to test the story by following the distant, barren islands that dot the ocean horizon, armed with pink dresses, flowered ribbons, and a quirky plush puppy named Periwinkle.

As the tide pulls them toward the mysterious isles, the children’s imagination turns the shoreline into a portal to a world of floating islands ruled by a whimsical monarch.
