A learned scholar named Stone, once a promising official, now lives in modest seclusion, his reputation for poetry and wit drawing admirers from near and far. When a distant patron requests his instruction for a young child, Stone sees a chance to combine his love of letters with a long‑standing yearning for a talented companion. He sets out with his faithful page, hoping the journey to a famed scenic spot will bring him face to face with a woman whose mind matches his own.
Along the river, they board a pleasure boat with an old poet and a charismatic friend, turning an ordinary outing into a lively contest of verses. The air is filled with spring blossoms, the clink of cups, and the playful banter of scholars testing each other’s skill. As the group debates the merits of imitation versus originality, Stone’s desire for a true literary equal grows, hinting at both the joys and the complications of seeking love in a world where talent and reputation intertwine.

Known only by the pen name Nanbeiheguanshizhe, this elusive writer is tied to the classical Chinese novel Chun liu ying (Spring Warbler). Very little about the person behind the name survives, which gives the work an extra air of mystery.
