Description

Born to the duke and duchess of Montpensier, Charlotte was earmarked for a cloistered future the moment she arrived in the world. Instead of a tranquil convent life, her childhood was spent under strict confinement at the Abbey of Jouarre, where she was pressured to assume the role of abbess against her will. The young princess documented her protest in an authentic act, supported by the testimonies of the nuns, and even her mother eventually regretted the harsh methods used against her.

Through discreet contact with leading Protestant figures—including her sister, the duchess of Bouillon, and Jeanne d’Albret, queen of Navarre—Charlotte began to question the doctrines imposed on her. Determined to claim her own destiny, she confided her intention to leave Jouarre to her allies, who arranged a safe passage to the court of the Elector Palatine, Frederick III, in Heidelberg. In February 1572 she stepped beyond the convent walls, finding a warm welcome among the reformist community and the promise of a life guided by her own conscience.
