Description

The story opens on a lavish spring ball at the President’s mansion, where the town’s elite mingle beneath glittering chandeliers. Amid the laughter of officers and the gentle teasing of the nervous Assessor, a sense of carefree youthful bravado clashes with the older generation’s warnings about health and propriety. As the evening unfolds, the bustling ballroom becomes a stage for whispered alliances, subtle rivalries, and the ever‑present hope of love.

Into this lively scene steps Count Styrum, a handsome thirty‑year‑old drawn to the gathering like a moth to light. While he scans the crowd, his gaze settles on a shy young woman perched on a low divan, sparking an instant, almost bewildering attraction. Their encounter promises the delicate dance of courtship against a backdrop of aristocratic expectations, hinting at the tender romance that will blossom as the night deepens.
