CANDLE AND CRIB - CHAPTER I - MOLONEY'S
Moloney’s sits at the bend of the Crooked Boreen, a low, thatched house that seems to have grown straight from the bog‑side itself. Its thick mud walls are white‑washed to a bright sheen, and the ever‑burning hearth throws a welcoming glow onto the polished pewter dishes and swept floor. The scent of pine and peat mingles with the crackle of fire, making the cottage feel like the heart of Ardenoo on a cold, wet night.
Inside, Big Michael wrestles with a damp coat and an overflowing market basket while his wife, a wiry woman of sharp eyes, paces the kitchen demanding news. The evening is Christmas Eve, and the couple anxiously awaits a letter that would confirm a long‑promised visitor’s arrival. Their growing unease hints at deeper worries, and the warm glow of the hearth can’t quite chase away the chill of uncertainty that settles over Moloney’s.
