About the author

Born near Enfield, County Meath, Katherine Frances Purdon was an Irish writer who spent much of her life close to the community that shaped her fiction. She was educated at Alexandra College in Dublin and became known as both a novelist and a playwright.

Purdon is closely associated with the Irish Revival, and reference sources also note her involvement with the United Irishwomen. Her best-known work includes The Folk of Furry Farm (1914), a book praised for its vivid, sympathetic picture of country life, along with other fiction and shorter dramatic pieces.

What makes her stand out is the tone of her writing: gentle, sharply observant, and deeply interested in the rhythms of ordinary people. Even in brief works, she had a gift for turning local speech, small incidents, and eccentric personalities into something memorable.
