CANDIDA - BERNARD SHAW - 1898
ACT I
Set against the gray sprawl of late‑Victorian London, the story opens in a tidy parsonage that overlooks the leafy expanse of Victoria Park. Inside, Reverend James Mavor Morell is surrounded by a clutter of pamphlets, political tracts and literary volumes, his desk a battlefield of ideas as a typist taps away in the background. The room, warmed by a generous fire and filled with the quiet hum of daily routine, hints at the clash between respectable middle‑class respectability and the restless social currents swirling outside its windows.
Beyond the garden walls, the bustling streets and the park’s open spaces host a variety of characters—political agitators, clergy, and ordinary workers—each navigating the same cityscape of brick, soot and ambition. As the Reverend’s thoughts turn to the pressing issues of his time, the stage is set for lively debates and unexpected encounters that will test his convictions and the world he inhabits.

A razor-sharp Irish playwright and critic, he turned comedy into a tool for questioning politics, class, religion, and social habits. Best known for plays like Pygmalion and Saint Joan, he wrote with wit that still feels fresh.
