Description

In a world where the South emerged victorious from the Civil War, the United States has been reshaped into a patchwork of rival territories. The story is narrated by a man who, though writing in 1877, was born decades later, allowing him to view the altered history with the distance of memory and the immediacy of family legend. Through his eyes we glimpse a nation divided by borders, economies, and lingering resentments, all anchored by the lingering echo of a war that never truly ended.

The narrator’s childhood is colored by the tales of his one‑armed grandfather, a veteran of the “War of Southron Independence,” whose experiences illustrate the everyday hardships of a society still reeling from conflict. As inflation, food riots, and shifting political powers ripple through their lives, the protagonist wrestles with questions of destiny and choice. This opening offers a richly detailed portrait of an alternate past, inviting listeners to imagine how a single different outcome could have reshaped everyday life.
