Best known for the classic alternate-history novel Bring the Jubilee, this American writer brought a sharp, imaginative twist to science fiction. Though he published relatively little, his books left a lasting mark on the genre.
Joseph Ward Moore (August 10, 1903 – January 29, 1978) was an American writer whose reputation rests largely on a small but memorable body of science fiction. He is especially associated with Bring the Jubilee (1953), a landmark alternate-history novel that imagines a world in which the Confederacy won the American Civil War.
Moore was born in Madison, New Jersey, and was raised in Montreal and New York. Before and during his writing career, he held a wide range of jobs, and he was largely self-educated. His fiction often mixed big speculative ideas with wit and a strong sense of social and political history.
Among his other notable books are Greener Than You Think and Lot. Critics have often pointed out that he did not publish frequently, but the work he did produce was distinctive enough to become influential, especially among readers who enjoy thoughtful, idea-driven science fiction.
