Description

A sunny July morning on the Long Beach shore finds eight‑year‑old Bobby Vernon, a lively boy with bright blue eyes and a love of adventure, slipping off his shoes to feel the ocean’s edge. He’s joined by Peggy Sansone, a slightly older girl he befriended on a train, and the two set off hand‑in‑hand, their laughter mixing with the gulls and the faint hum of lifeguards on watch. Their mother, Mrs. Vernon, watches with a mix of affection and unease, granting Bobby a brief freedom while reminding him of his promise to stay close.

The gentle tide seems to beckon the children deeper, and Bobby’s bravado grows as he boasts about his swimming skills, urging Peggy to follow. Yet the sea, unusually frothy and powerful, hints at a hidden strength that the carefree pair can’t yet see. Their innocent quest to test the water’s reach sets the stage for a day that will linger in memory long after the waves recede.
