Description

In a dim, half‑empty Boston theatre, a seasoned critic named Matravers takes his seat, poised to judge a controversial new drama that champions a strange creed called Isteinism. He is paired with Ellison, a fervent admirer of the mysterious lead actress whose presence onstage seems to ignite an almost mystical fire. As the curtain rises, the audience is drawn into a world where art, philosophy, and personal ambition clash, and the critic’s detached professionalism begins to wobble under the spell of the performance.

The early act sets up a web of tension between the decadence the play celebrates and the cautious skepticism of the press. Matravers finds himself questioning not only the meaning of the work but also his own convictions, while subtle hints of hidden motives swirl around the enigmatic heroine. Listeners are invited to follow the uneasy marriage of criticism and obsession, waiting for the moment when the actress finally breaks through the gloom and transforms the theatre into something unforgettable.
