Description

Virginia leaves her modest farm life for a train that carries her to a bustling Massachusetts village and then into a Fifth Avenue mansion owned by her uncle, the railroad magnate Phineas Duge. The opulent rooms, marble, portraits, and polished servants overwhelm her, making her question her simple dresses and confidence. As she steps into Duge’s private study, she meets the stern yet charismatic patriarch, setting the stage for a clash between humble origins and high society.

The narrative follows Virginia as she navigates the glittering but treacherous world of New York’s elite, where alliances shift and hidden motives surface among relatives, suitors, and schemers. Her innocence draws both protective allies and cunning adversaries, and she must learn quickly to wield her wits in a game of power. Listeners will be drawn into a richly detailed early‑20th‑century drama of ambition, family loyalty, and the search for identity amid wealth and intrigue.
