About the author

Born in London on October 22, 1866, Edward Phillips Oppenheim became one of the best-known writers of popular fiction in the English-speaking world. Reliable reference sources describe him as a prolific English novelist whose specialty was suspense, espionage, and intrigue, and note that his fiction often mixed glamorous settings with fast-moving plots.

Oppenheim left school young and worked in his father's leather business before writing took over his life. Over a long career, he produced a very large body of work—more than 100 novels, with some sources putting the total above 150 when short stories and other writing are included. He was especially associated with political thrillers and spy fiction, and his 1920 novel The Great Impersonation remains one of his best-known books.

He died in Saint Peter Port, Guernsey, on February 3, 1946. Although critics have often treated his novels as pure entertainment, that is also part of their appeal: they are clear, stylish, and built to keep pages turning.
