TABLE
The story opens with Abbé Marigot, a modest cleric and devoted teacher, suddenly forced to leave the elegant world of Chantilly. After years of guiding the young vicomtes Armand d’Oinèche and Gilbert de Lorizon through Latin lessons and polite society, he must bid farewell to the castle, the familiar meals, and the comforting rhythm of his scholarly life. His resignation feels both a personal loss and a reluctant acceptance of duty, as he prepares the boys for a future beyond his gentle tutelage.
Marigot reflects on the boys’ upbringing: courteous, skilled on horseback, and adept at navigating courtly gossip, yet educated chiefly to avoid conscription rather than to master the classics. He recalls the proud lineage of their families and the expectation that they will soon trade their refined manners for the rigors of military service. As he delivers his parting counsel—“remain Christian and honest”—the narrative hints at the tension between noble heritage and the inevitable demands of the world awaiting the young vicomtes.

A French novelist, essayist, and sportsman, he moved easily between literary circles and the world of competitive fencing. His life and work carry the flavor of Belle Époque and early 20th-century France, with a mix of elegance, wit, and discipline.
