In a rain‑soaked late autumn the big Kankaan manor stands under a stubborn gray sky, its long, uneven roads glistening with mud. Inside, the hearth burns brightly while a blind old woman tends the kitchen fire, and the household staff chatter about the coming winter and the arrival of a new girl named Anna. The servants, a mix of piikatyttö (young maids) and seasoned hands, are already measuring her place in their tightly knit world.
Their conversations swing between jokes about the village’s “marriage school” where young people learn the art of courtship and sharp remarks about who will claim a new partner first. Anna, fresh from the fields, finds herself under the watchful eyes of both the master’s wife and the skeptical maid‑leaders, each eager to test her resolve. As the days lengthen, the rhythm of work and gossip promises both small comforts and hidden strains for the newcomer.

A Finnish writer who published under the pen name Heikki Rasila, he is remembered for work tied to Finnish literary life in the early 20th century. The surviving public record appears quite sparse, which gives his profile a quiet, hard-to-find quality today.
