JOURNAL OF A TOUR

Description

These pages follow a French botanist as he pushes deep into the Kentucky frontier between 1793 and 1796. He records the sweep of the rolling hills, the dense woodlands and the small settlements sprouting along the rivers, while cataloguing unfamiliar plants and noting the customs of the native peoples he meets. His observations blend scientific curiosity with a traveler’s wonder at a land still largely unmapped by Europeans.

A decade later his son retraces the western edge of the Alleghenies, wandering through what would become Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. His journal mixes detailed descriptions of forest cover, wildlife and the fledgling towns he encounters, offering a vivid snapshot of early American expansion. The narrative captures both the challenges of the terrain and the excitement of discovering new botanical specimens.

The third account comes from a New England scholar on a spring 1803 tour north‑west of the mountains. His notes focus on the social fabric of frontier communities, interactions with indigenous groups, and the practical realities of travel in a rugged landscape. Accompanied by period maps, the three journals together paint a lively portrait of the early American West as it was first explored and recorded.
