Description

Set against the rolling hills and shadowed woodlands of 1770s Connecticut, the story follows sixteen‑year‑old Betty Wolcott as she balances the duties of a reluctant maid with the restless curiosity of youth. When a disoriented soldier stumbles into the forest near Great Pond, Betty and her mischievous little sister, Miss Moppet, must decide whether to hide him, help him, or risk drawing unwanted attention in a land divided by war. Their playful banter and quick‑thinking rescue attempts reveal a world where loyalty to family clashes with the larger turmoil of a nascent nation.

Through vivid scenes of horseback rides, secret herb searches, and whispered plans beneath ancient maples, the narrative captures both the ordinary rhythms of colonial life and the undercurrents of danger that seep through every village street. As friendships are tested and hidden motives surface, Betty’s spirited defiance hints at a larger role she may yet play in the conflict that reshapes America.
