Description

On the quiet southern shore of Lake Saimaa, a modest cottage stands apart from the typical Savonian farms, its walls sheltering the widowed corporal Svärd and his young daughter Aina. Their world is a rugged community of humble fishermen who carve a living from the icy waters and the winter forests, daring each other to hunt bears for honor. Among them, Lauri, a respected son of an aging fisherman, is celebrated for his skill and bravery, while Niilo, the wealthy heir of the village’s most prosperous fisherman, watches with growing envy.

When the Finnish–Russian war erupts in 1808, the fragile peace shatters. Lauri is called to serve, and Niilo’s jealousy intensifies as he seeks to undermine the man who has won Aina’s heart. The young men must navigate duty, rivalry, and the looming threat of battle, each forced to choose between personal ambition and the loyalty demanded by their battered homeland.
