Description

A determined pair of brothers set out in spring 1893 to chart a vast, unmapped region of northern Canada that the government still called “terra incognita.” Armed with cedar canoes, a cache of sketch maps from local Chippewyan traders, and a growing sense of awe for the endless treeless plains, they prepare to navigate a chain of lakes, rivers and rugged portages that promise to lead straight into the heart of the Barren Lands. The opening pages capture their meticulous planning, the logistics of outfitting for a 3,200‑mile trek, and the anticipation of confronting a landscape few white eyes have ever seen.

As the expedition moves northward, the brothers encounter a striking mosaic of cultures—voyageurs, Hudson’s Bay Company traders, Cree and Chippewyan families, and even distant Eskimo hunters—each offering glimpses of life on the edge of civilization. Their journey through relentless rapids, frozen lakes and snow‑bound tundra hints at both the wonder and the hardship awaiting them, inviting listeners to share the early stages of an adventure that blends scientific inquiry with raw frontier spirit.
