Description

In the waning light of a September evening, a small town buzzes with the relief of news that General Lee’s forces have retreated. Amid the crowds stands Bessie Warren, a bright‑eyed young woman still cloaked in mourning for the brother she lost on the battlefield, and her solemn father, the beloved local doctor, whose patriotism remains unshaken. Their quiet carriage into the station becomes a small tableau of the era’s mix of grief, hope, and steadfast devotion to the Union cause.

Bessie has poured her energy into the Soldiers’ Aid Society, stitching tiny comforts—Havelocks, mittens, and needle‑cases—into packages that travel to the front. When a grateful regiment replies with a photograph of its officers, her eyes linger on Second Lieutenant Paul Revere Abbot, whose handsome, earnest bearing sparks a fluttering curiosity. The exchange of handwritten notes and a single portrait hints at a budding connection that could blossom even as the war still rages.
