Description

Set in the years after the Civil War, the novel follows Lieutenant Ray, a spirited cavalry officer who has chosen to stay with his regiment rather than return home to Kentucky. He wrestles with the pull of duty against the longing for his aging mother and the promise he made to his sister, whose marriage has taken her far west. In the midst of garrison life, Ray’s easy banter with a fellow trooper reveals a restless heart and a yearning for purpose beyond the barracks.

When Marion Sandford—strong‑willed, compassionate, and bound by the memory of her late husband—arrives at the post, her presence reshapes the soldiers’ world. Their growing connection is tested by rumors of conflict on the frontier, the strain of military law, and the shadow of past sacrifices. The story captures the tension between love and obligation, offering a vivid portrait of post‑war America and the people striving to rebuild their lives.
