Description

A restless narrator leaves his comfortable farm for the bleak, windswept marsh of Pont du Sable, drawn by an abandoned stone house and an endless season of waterfowl hunting. The locals in the bustling café of Bar la Rose warn him of the village’s reputation as a “hole of vagabonds,” yet his love of the sea and the promise of a wild garden outweigh their doubts. Boarding a rattling narrow‑gauge train, he sets out for the crumbling estate that once belonged to a marquis, eager to claim a new life on the edge of the dunes.

The story unfolds against a vivid coastal landscape, where the salty air, grey mudflats and distant gulls shape both the setting and the protagonist’s yearning. Early encounters with the town’s colorful characters—bellowing butchers, stoic blacksmiths, and a skeptical mayor—hint at the blend of humor and hardship that will color his solitary venture. Listeners are invited to share his hopeful optimism and the rustic charm of a place that feels both cursed and irresistible.
